Anything like me

Brrrr....... It's cold out there!

Monday was such a beautiful warm day; we spent most of it outside laying mulch for our earliest summer crops and getting our veggies already in the ground covered up. Less than 12 hours later and it was, literally, freezing! I must admit, I am not a huge fan of cold weather. But, hopefully it is killing some bugs and we will see at least one good thing from this arctic blast. So, my last two days have been spent mostly inside: working on tax stuff, rendering lard for soap (and biscuits, and bread, and tortillas, and pie, and just for frying things in general), sewing a bit and standing in front of the heater a lot.
Oh, and this...

In my defense, I had a really strong desire to take pictures of our vegetables today. Cold days make me want to update records and our blog. The only problem with cold days is the lack of photo ops, which explains the cabbage kale patch kid.
It started last week. Our market manager from the South Durham market just had onesies printed and asked us to take some pictures of the wolfe-man in one. So, I added a carrot for good measure.
He seems to like it.
The garlic scepter...not so much.
But, aside from dressing my baby up like a winter vegetable, I am working on plans for the 2014 season. The greenhouse is completely full of beautiful starts and as soon as we get some nice weather for a few days they will be going in the ground! We will be at the South Durham market this Saturday from 9 to noon, unfortunately, the cute baby will be staying home.

Colder Weather

Happy 2014! We are enjoying this new year with our new addition and taking time to review 2013.

A big thank you to all of our supporters and customers. We are hoping 2014 will be our best season ever! The first market of the year was wonderful and we were happy to have lots of fresh veggies and eggs for our faithful customers who braved the cold morning to eat locally. We plan to continue selling at the South Durham Farmers Market for the next few weeks and as spring approaches we will attend other markets as well. Be on the lookout for our CSA package this year as we start planning for spring and summer.

Spring Fever

I can see spring in the 10 day forecast! And as much as we have enjoyed the slower pace of winter, we are ready for some warmer weather! Our transplants are aching to get in the ground and we are ready for our early crops to take off. The cold weather doesn't seem to bother these little guys though, who won't stay still long enough for me to take a decent picture.

We have been attending our South Durham market all winter, but on April 6th we also start our downtown Cary market and South Durham switches to regular hours. We are looking forward to what April and March have in store. Below are strawberries and artichokes looking good!
And, we have lots of happy chickens laying amazing eggs thanks to their time on our winter cover crop. They are very efficient lawnmowers.
Be on the lookout for more info about our Farmers Market appearances and CSA information!

Southern Comfort Zone

We are getting geared up for the 2013 season. Seeds are ordered, field plans made, new chickens arrive next month ( old chickens are being culled), goats are pregnant and due to start kidding in February, farmers market applications are being completed and we are putting in our walk in cooler next week!!
It's not all work around here though, we have enjoyed some relaxing down time and have also been working on some around the house projects. And other than a day at Thanksgiving and one at Christmas we have continued to provide the South Durham market customers with fresh lettuce, radishes, kale, broccoli and more! We have also been taking deliveries to Antonia's in Hillsborough. They have some awesome dishes!

These are some pictures from the last couple markets.
And some from the fields...
Here are a few of my goats...

It's hard to tell, but they are all getting ready to kid. Well, except for Teddy the billy... because of obvious reasons. First babies are due February 15th!
Last week I started the process of culling our chickens. I will spare you the details but, here is the before...
and here is the after...
As we keep busy, remember you can check us out at the South Durham Farmers Market on Saturdays from 10AM to 1PM. We are planning on selling all winter, except for a couple weekends when we have other obligations.

Sunshine and Summertime

It was a warm one, wow! This is what I dreamed of doing all day...
Well, not exactly. Maybe by the pool or the ocean; but I guess I didn't actually dream of taking a dip in the cow's pond. Either way, everyone was trying to cool down today. We spent the morning digging up 300 lbs of fingerling potatoes- so we are super excited to offer them at market this weekend. Tomorrow will be busy getting together tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, green beans and beets for market, along with some beautiful cut flowers. Hope you'll come out and see us this weekend at the South Durham Farmers Market or the Downtown Cary Farmers Market!
